First Footin’ returned on New Year’s Day with a packed programme of FREE live music and performance taking place in city centre attractions, pubs and venues across both the Old and New Town areas.  

Audiences explore the city, discovering a feast of live music featuring artists from across Scotland and beyond, as we embrace Hogmanay traditions of friendship, love, resolution and delicious food and drink.

Imagine the party is still reeling from the night before and Scotland’s pioneering folk trio Lau are deep in the tunes. Kathryn Joseph has just popped by and is about to sing. Lau is the multi award-winning trio of Kris Drever (voice and guitar), Martin Green (accordion and electronics) and Aidan O’Rourke (fiddle). Their guest for this New Year’s Day party is the beguiling cult singer/songwriter Kathryn Joseph.

Fergus McCreadie is one of the most exciting jazz pianists on the world stage today. With a unique blend of jazz and Scottish folk inspired by the country’s sublime landscapes, his music captures the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide, with an appeal that extends far beyond the constraints of the genre. Fergus’ recent accolades include winning the 2022 Scottish Album of the Year, 2022 JazzFM Instrumentalist of the Year and shortlist for the 2022 Mercury Prize.

In this special afternoon of live music at Greyfriars Kirk, the Fergus McCreadie Trio (featuring David Bowden & Stephen Henderson) will be joined by some very special guests.

Two exceptional and accomplished new voices on the Scottish music scene, Juliette Lemoine and Chris Amer together explore traditional Scottish music with originality, energy and depth. Since launching her SAY Award Long-listed album ‘Soaring’ with a sold-out performance at Celtic Connections 2023, cellist Juliette has continued to cement her status as a trailblazer, progressing and redefining the cello within Scottish traditional music. Chris Amer plays a unique 5-string theorbed tenor guitar and exemplifies a thoughtful, musically intelligent playing style. As a unique duo, their live performances are an immersive dialogue characterised by rich emotional colour, close interaction and vibrant spontaneity.

Edinburgh born Sean Shibe, is one of the most versatile guitarists performing today, Sean Shibe’s innovative approach to his instrument has enhanced his reputation for having ‘one of the most discriminating ears in the business’ (Gramaphone). He was the first guitarists ever to be selected for BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artist scheme, to be awarded Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship and, in 2018, to receive the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Young Artists. Accolades for his recordings include two Gramophone Awards and an Opus Klassik. He was also the 2022 recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award.

Sean Shibe

Mira Benjamin is a Canadian violinist living in the UK, where she performs with Apartment House and Plus Minus Ensemble. She plays new and old music with an experimental outlook, and is interested in how the body holds and experiences knowledge through practice. Mira’s varied career has spanned many genres of musical practice, including work with electronics, dance, improvisation, film and theatre (Théâtre Momentum, Amber Priestley). Since 2014 Mira has resided in London, where she is Lecturer in Performance at Goldsmiths, University of London, and in 2016, was the recipient of the Virginia Parker Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts – awarded annually to a Canadian musician in recognition of a valuable contribution to artistic life in Canada and internationally.

Silent Film Scores – The Graeme Stephen Trio play live to a screening of Buster Keatons – ‘One Week and The Haunted House’.  

Award winning guitarist and composer Graeme Stephen performs his original scores to a screening of the films ‘One Week and The Haunted House’ by the legendary actor/director Buster Keaton.  

The performance features Graeme Stephen on Guitar, Elie Afif on Bass and Davide Rinalde on Drums.

HYDROPONICS

Hydroponics is an instrumental plant-inspired folk project created by Pete Wall. Combining the members’ collective backgrounds in folk, classical, jazz, funk, flamenco and pop, the band involves the audience in the joyful ease of four friends and musicians making the music they love. Having played for Celtic Connections and Sofar Sounds in 2023 in their first year of gigging, Hydroponics are currently working on the release of their debut EP, Don’t Overwater.

Delivering angular alt-rock with deep electronic grooves, Cloth are twins Rachael and Paul Swinton. Cloth’s second album ‘Secret Measure’ finds the band expanding their creative circle for the first time, turning their tried-and-tested insular working process on its head by collaborating with Bristol producer Ali Chant.

‘Future Superstar in loading buffermode’ that’s what BBC called Becky Sikasa called her after naming her song ‘Twelve Wooden Boxes’ the Track of the Week. From the very start she has captivated tastemakers and music lovers in in UK and Germany, with a voice as versatile as it is grounded, she delves deep to tie her heart to her words. Trails of vocal harmony weave effortlessly through colourful arrangements to complete explorative, vibrant off-pop tracks.

BEMZ | 4pm

Bemz is a Glasgow based rapper, who is one of a number of artists helping to further establish Scotland as a bona fide hotbed for black music. Having first fallen in love with music through the usual childhood influences and inspirations, Bemz began experimenting with making his own sounds, primarily as a medium of self-expression. Bemz’ strengths lie in the honesty within his music. He delivers very raw, emotionally charged view of life, which never falls into the cliched trappings that often come with that territory. Truth is his asset.

NO WINDOWS | 2pm

Edinburgh duo Morgan Morris and singer Verity Slangen make up the two halves of No Windows SAY Award – Sound of Young Scotland Winners. The striking Edinburgh duo sound like nobody else, with raw acumen and industry, and a unique approach, story and style that looks set to strike a note with music fans nationwide. Their tender talents have got a lot of creative miles left in their tank; if their early output is anything to go by, No Windows could be a generational talent. Only time will tell – they’ve got plenty of it.

HANNAH FISHER CEILIDH BAND

The Isle of Mull’s Hannah Fisher & Sorren Maclean are well-known fixtures in the Scottish music scene, working with some of the UK’s most prominent folk and indie artists including Idlewild, King Creosote, Capercaillie, Wolfstone and Mike McGoldrick. Formed exclusively for events reached by ferry, The HF ceilidh band bring their wild west (coast) ceilidh across the water for a rare mainland chance to dance.

Alas de Liona emerged in the Scottish music scene after a university course brought her from the California desert to Edinburgh. Her musical talents for dreamy songs with eloquent lyrics found a home and she honed her skills with her Radio Astronomy EP release in 2021 and singles Spirals and Vortices in 2022.  She has in the past year opened for Kathryn Joseph, Rufus Wainwright, The Proclaimers, Hamish Hawk and Travis and has just recorded a full length album, Gravity of Gold, with producer Rod Jones at Post Electric in Leith for a 2024 release.   

CAMMY BARNES | 5PM

Cammy Barnes is a Scottish singer-songwriter from Fife.  He has had success with multiple singles charting in the UK Top 20 and #1 entries on the Singer/Songwriter & Country/Alt iTunes Charts.  He has supported Brit award winning artist Tom Walker and played several sell out shows including the prestigious King Tuts in Glasgow. Cammy recently teamed up with members of Rock Choir, the world’s largest contemporary choir, to release a charity single in aid of Nordoff and Robbins with proceeds going to Nordoff and Robbins, the UK’s largest music therapy charity.  With a growing fanbase, he has just completed the first run of dates for his ambitious UK tour, which saw him perform at Glasgow’s SWG3 as well as venues in Dunfermline, London and Edinburgh and he was a Semi Finalist on Britain’s Got Talent.   

FIZA | 6PM

Hailing from North West London, FIZA is currently residing in Edinburgh and has become a staple of the gig circuit of Scotland. She has performed in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. Her music fuses together intricate guitar, well-penned lyrics and vocals that are emotional, making her sound her own. Her debut single ‘Pieces’ was featured on BBC Asian Network and BBC Introducing Radio Scotland, being named their track of the week. 

MAN OF MOON | 7PM

Man of Moon burst onto the Scottish music scene in 2015 with their first release ‘The Road/This World’ which ‘The New York Times’ called “the best debut single by a British band since ceremony by New Order”.  A two piece alternative rock band who have created their own sound, blending krautrock, psychedelic and electronic elements together.  The band picked up a name for themselves as an exciting live band selling out shows all over the UK. They went on to tour Europe twice with fellow UK bands ‘Django Django’ and ‘The Twilight Sad’ in 2018/2019. The band then released their highly anticipated debut album ‘Dark Sea’ in 2020 to critical acclaim with ‘Tenement TV’ naming it their album of the year.

2019 Scots Trad Awards ‘Musician of the Year’ nominee 

Tom Oaks is regarded as one of the UK’s top Flautists and Multi instrumentalists. Edinburgh based, he  has spent the last two decades ploughing many different furrows as a traditional/contemporary musician, composer, producer and sound designer.   

Known widely for his work with Shetland fiddler Ross Couper (‘Exquisite’ The Guardian), genre bending pan Finnish act ‘The Auvo Quartet’ and new Scottish powerhouse OBT.   

Working with scenes as diverse as Arabic Hip-Hop + Moroccan Gnawa, Contemporary Americana, Indian traditional, Classical and Bhangra music, Scandinavian Traditional music, Jazz and on projects with the Northern Sinfonia, Mr Mc Fall’s Chamber and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.  

Tom has performed with a veritable who’s who of the Scottish, Irish and English scenes including Tim Eady, Chris Stout, Jackie Oates, Kevin Henderson, Adam Sutherland, Allan MacDonald, Cathal McConnell and many more.    

He was shortlisted this year for ‘Original Work of the Year’ for his Fringe Show, ‘The Hearth’.

William Douglas is a singer songwriter from Edinburgh who also makes up one third of the psychedelic rock n’ roll band Miracle Glass Company. Expect classic sounding original bangers and the kind of effortless stage charisma that you’d expect from a performer who gigs over 300 times a year.

Usually part of a larger three piece, fast-rising indie rock outfit Picture The Scene will be gracing the stage for a solo acoustic performance to kick off the New Year in style! Having toured the UK and Europe this year, including most recently as the resident band on ‘The Independent Music Tour’, receiving Radio 1 and Radio X airplay, playing their first major festivals and selling out shows up and down the UK, this is a performance that’s not to be missed!

Cyrano is an Edinburgh based artist and producer.  He eleased his debut EP Consolations, produced by Foals’ Kit Monteith and Luke Smith.  Throughout 2022, Cyrano supported artists including Westerman, Laura Misch, Redolent, Anchorsong and Daithí, before finishing the year with a sold-out headline show at The Waiting Room in London.   Cyrano started 2023 in New Zealand, performing in Auckland after his debut EP broke into the Apple Music Alternative Charts.  

Defined by his live performance, concepts and collaboration, Cyrano has been named in Vic Galloway’s ’25 Artists to Watch in 2023’.

Nicole Cassandra Smit is an Edinburgh based artist who has made her name as a powerful singer in the Scottish blues scene. Known for her smokey voice and versatility, she embarked on a solo journey in 2022 across multiple genres with the debut of her first album ‘Third in Line’. A proud Indonesian/Swedish woman with erb’s palsy, representing the ‘other’ by energetic, emotive and unafraid performances whether on stage or in the studio.”

Philip Joseph Rae is a Scottish singer-songwriter and musician, once described as a fusion of “Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy meets Jeff Buckley.” His musical journey has seen acclaim with singles including ‘Three Drunken Brothers’, ‘Sun Keeps Rising,’ and ‘She’s Animal’ earning support from BBC Scotland’s Roddy Hart and a full-page feature in The Sunday Times. With his deeply personal musical narrative, Phil continues to captivate audiences, building anticipation for his eagerly awaited debut album ‘A Marvellous Work and A Wonder’ in 2024.  

ANNA LEYDEN | 6PM

Anna Leyden is an Irish singer-songwriter who accompanies her songs with rhythmic piano taking influences from the likes of Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell and Carole King. She has performed since her early teens alongside her parents who are folk singers and in the electro pop band ‘Go Wolf’ who supported Bastille and The Killers back in 2014. Since then Anna has released two EPs, the last of which ‘All Part of It’ was released in April 2021, featuring a full band backing and features the track ‘Breathe’ that made it to the semi-finals of the International Song Writing Competition 2020.

For lovers of Norah Jones, Billie Holliday, and Lana Del Rey, Impala’s charm, wit, and prowess are undeniable. Self defined as “hillbilly noir” with roots of Americana, folk and jazz, Cera, a multifaceted force to be reckoned with, also leads two other bands, The New Prohibition and Delightful Squalor.  

As seen and heard on BBC Scotland, NPR Radio, The List, at Kelburn Garden Party, Eden Festival, Knockengorroch, Doune the Rabbit Hole, and countless well-loved stages all over the world, Cera Impala has toured internationally since leaving her home in Arizona in 1994. She released her 5th album of original work, “Wildest Dreams” in Oct 2022.  

 It takes a songwriter with deep and clear understanding of theory and multiple technical disciples to make music this complex and nuanced sound utterly effortless. Run, don’t walk to bless your ears and soul with this delicious nectar.’ Calvin Arsenia
