Fireworks, Edinburgh's Hogmanay 2022

Residents & Business Access

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is back and ready to light-up the city, showing the world how to party into 2024 with four days of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 30th Anniversary celebrations from Friday 29 December 2023 to Monday 1 January 2024, featuring fantastic live music, spectacular fireworks and the World-Famous Street Party.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is Scotland’s New Year festival, commencing with the return of the much-loved Torchlight Procession on 29 December, followed by Night Afore activities before the world-famous Street Party and Concert in the Gardens on Hogmanay night. Audiences on New Year’s Day can enjoy a free musical and cultural programme in various venues across the city.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Torchlight Procession – 29th December

This year there is a new route for the Torchlight Procession and whilst no pedestrian access will be restricted to any properties, there will be road closures along the route and pedestrian diversions on the Meadows.

The Procession will assemble on the Meadows with a pre-procession Fire Festival, before heading up Simpson Loan, across Forrest Road onto George IV Bridge, turning left onto Lawnmarket towards Castlehill and onto Johnston Terrace, reaching the finale point of the procession on Castle Terrace where an Avenue of Fire will await all torch bearers who will make their way to extinguish their torches at our Torch Dip & Tip Stations.

With minimum event infrastructure, the Torchlight Procession, including the event build and take down period, will take place over one day with all operations carried out within the parameters set by the City of Edinburgh Council. Every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party

As in previous years, the arrangements for the Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party will involve the installation of barriers and gates to ensure public safety.  The footprint has changed slightly since last year; with the same careful planning, and minimum built infrastructure, we have been able to reduce build times, minimising disruption as best we can.

During the event build and take down period, all operations will be carried out within the parameters set by the City of Edinburgh Council. Every effort will be made to minimise the inconvenience with noisier operations being carried out earlier in the evening. There is a necessity however to work through the night in some locations, in particular Castle Street, Frederick Street and Princes Street on the night of 30 December for the build, and in the early hours of 1 January for the take down. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause and would like to thank you for your understanding while we prepare for the event.

Access through arena gates is only monitored during the event itself with the installation of these gates beginning on 30 December 2023 to be removed overnight after the Street Party.

It is only during Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party that pedestrian access is restricted, which will begin at 18:00 on 31 December until after the event (approx. 01:00 on 1 January). However, routes have been kept open wherever possible and where there are restrictions Access Passes are available to help ease passage.

Event stewards will be located at all Street Party entry points to check passes and direct residents and hotel guests along the pedestrian access lanes.

    • Free ‘Resident Access Passes’ & ‘Business Access Passes’ are provided to anyone residing within the event arena so they can access their properties/hotels.
    • Please note, these passes are strictly to allow residents, businesses and customers access to properties within the gated Street Party arena as well as a lane for medics and safety personnel to move quickly across the event area. For this reason, Police and Stewards will be asking anyone found standing in the lane to move on.
    • An allocation of 10 Residential Access Passes are available to each residential property within the arena, with additional requirements available on request
    • A series of pedestrian access lanes are created to ensure that residents can access properties within the arena quickly and safely, out with the Street Party main event areas
    • Event Stewards are located at all entry points to check passes and ensure that access lanes are used by residents and for business staff/customers
