Torchlight Procession

30 December 2018, 7.00pm

Blaze throgh the city accompanied by pipers and drummers, fire and fanfare and forge a river of light through the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town. A spectacular and unforgettable family-friendly event culminating in the historic Holyrood Park. 

On reaching the Park, torchbearers will form the distinctive outline of Scotland. 14 wicker sculptures, each representing a region of Scotland and created by young people as part of #ScotArt will be placed within the outline and set ablaze as Scotland's beating heart, marking the end of Scotland's Year of Young People 2018.

Important Information

  • From the 6th December, it is now not possible to post international orders and your tickets will be held at the box office to collect.
  • Please visit the accessiblity page for detailed access information.  
  • The procession has three starting points. Your starting point will be clearly marked on your tickets (Zone 1 = St Giles' Street, Zone 2 = North Bridge, Zone 3 = South Bridge). You must pick your starting point when you purchase your ticket and you will not be able to change it later. You will only be able to enter and collect your torch at your chosen starting point.
  • You must proceed to your designated start point to collect your torch and join the procession. 
  • Torch collection times: Zone 1 from 5.00pm, Zone 2 from 5.30pm, Zone 3 from 5.30pm. 
  • Torch vouchers can be exchanged for torches at your chosen starting point on the night of the event.
  • High Street is accessed via St Giles' Street. 
  • The Torchlight Procession is an event featuring fire and wax based torches.
  • You must collect your tickets and torch vouchers from the Edinburgh's Christmas or Hogmanay box offices prior to joining the procession. Please see the Ticket Info page for details on where to collect tickets for Edinburgh's Hogmanay events. 
  • You MUST have a torch and/or ticket to take part in this year's Torchlight Procession. You can buy a minimum of one torch per group of 4. Each torch comes with one procession ticket, which the torch bearer MUST have. If there is more than one person in your group, you will need to purchase a ticket for each member of the group to take part in the Procession. 
  • Please note all extra tickets must be bought at the time of purchase of torches. If you have previously bought a torch and require an extra wristband please contact our box office team on 0131 510 0395 or boxoffice@edinburghshogmanay.com with your transaction ID and they will be able to help.
  • The Torchlight Procession is an outdoor event so please dress appropriately.
  • Torches are wax based (like a big candle), and safety guards are supplied to protect carrier hands from dripping wax. However, please note, when windy the wax from the torches can be blown onto clothing. Whilst easily removable (top tip — an iron and brown paper) please dress appropriately and do not carry torches if wearing delicate fabrics.
  • There are various 'dip and tip' points along the procession route where you can safely extnguish your torch. You MUST extinguish your torch at the end of the event or if you need to leave the event at any point during the procession. To extinguish your torch, you dip the top of the torch in the 'dip' bin and then tip it directly into the 'tip' bin. 
  • Anyone under 16yrs must be accompanied by an adult over 21yrs of age at all times.
  • While there is no age restriction at the Torchlight Procession, no children's buggies are permitted on the route. 
  • The Torchlight Procession is an incredibly safe event but we need participants to help maintain this. Please follow all safety instructions when carrying torches in this event.
  • The Event Organiser reserves the right to search Ticket Holder's bags and clothing for security reasons. 
  • The Torchlight has a strict NO DRONE policy
  • Spectators are encouraged to view the procession and finale in Holyrood Park.
  • Spectators of the event are welcome but please DO NOT join the procession en-route or stand in front of the procession to take photographs..
