The Torchlight procession has three form up areas on High Street, Royal Mile, North Bridge and South Bridge all of which are accessible though care must be taken with kerbstones when moving around. Due to the historic nature of the Old Town and Royal Mile, large sections of the route are cobbled and so care must be taken when passing through these areas as some parts may be uneven. Accessible toilets are available throughout the form up areas.
For those with mobility issues unable to stand for long periods of time or travel long distances, there is a joining point closer to the end of the procession route location at Abbey Strand next to the Palace of Holyrood House.
The Royal Mile runs at a downhill gradient running from west to east before flattening out around the Scottish Parliament. The event finale takes place in Holyrood Park which is a large grass area. There are pavements running alongside the park offering a more hard standing ground with excellent views of the firework display. Accessible toilets are available at the concessions area.
Concert in the Gardens
Concert in the Gardens is accessible from Kings Stables Road, and most of the route is accessible by a concrete pedestrian walkway within the gardens. There are 4 paths to the upper level of the garden with a steep gradient, parts of which are cobbled. Large parts of the gardens are grass covered. A clearly marked accessible viewing area is available on the top path overlooking the main stage. Accessible toilets are available throughout the arena.
There is stepped access to the Concert in the Gardens from Princes Street. There are 32 steps into the Concert arena from the West End of Princes Street and 47 steps into the Concert arena from the Mound entrance. Within the arena, the paths towards the west of the gardens have a lesser gradient than those in the east of the gardens.
Ceilidh Under the Castle
The Ceilidh Under the Castle is accessible from Kings Stables Road, and most of the route is accessible by a concrete pedestrian walkway within the gardens. Accessible toilets are available throughout the arena.
Bairns Afore is accessible from Kings Stables Road, and most of the route is accessible by a concrete pedestrian walkway within the gardens. There are 4 paths to the upper level of the garden with a steep gradient, parts of which are cobbled. Large parts of the gardens are grass covered. A clearly marked accessible viewing area is available on the top path overlooking the main stage. Accessible toilets are available throughout the arena.
The Hogmanay HQ venue is accessed from Mound Place which is largely a cobbled area with pavements. There is an access lift from the courtyard into the building and then once inside there is a lift up to the main hall. An accessible toilet is available within the venue.
The three Street Party entrances at Princes Street West End, Bank Street and South St David Street are fully accessible and once inside the arena it is paved throughout. There is a small gradient on Waverley Bridge and a steeper incline to access the Mound. Consideration should be given to the various kerbstones within the arena as the Street Party takes place on a closed off thoroughfare. Accessible toilets are available at each toilet block and these are located throughout the arena.
Whilst there is no specific parking for this event, a wide range of parking spaces are available throughout the city centre. Message from the Skies
Message from the Skies takes place at multiple locations throughout the City Centre. Edinburgh is a particularly hilly city with a number of steps throughout, especially within the Old Town area. Whilst every effort has been made to make the locations as accessible as possible, due the historic layout of the city this may make access to some locations more difficult. Audio description of all locations is available via the Message from the Skies app.
Locations with specific access issues:
St Cuthbert Kirkyard – Please enter and exit via the same entrance on King’s Stables Road.
Lady Stairs Close – Please enter and exit view Wardrop Court next to Deacon Brodies pub.
Scotsman Steps – Access may prove difficult to those with mobility issues. An audio desciption of this site is available.
