Why YOU should spend Hogmanay in Edinburgh
Why should you choose to celebrate New Year in Edinburgh? Put quite simply, no one else in the world celebrates the New Year like we do! If you’re still not convinced, we’ve put together this list of reasons why you should come and party with us…
The Massive Party
Hogmanay is a HUGE deal in Scotland because celebrating Christmas was effctively banned by Scottish Parliament for 400 years, only becoming a public holiday in Scotland again in 1958. And so, Hogmanay became the country's main celebration, complete with presents and parties. Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is now one of the biggest and best celebrations in the world, with 75,000 revellers taking to the streets to party together. No one celebrates New Year with as much revelry and passion as we do in Edinburgh… and the only way to experience it is to be there!
It's Steeped in Tradition
From the Torchlight Procession, to the Ceilidh under the Castle and the Loony Dook, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is steeped in a rich tradition that you can be a part of. Blaze through the streets of Old Town, dance under the iconic Edinburgh Castle, jump into the freezing waters of Firth of Forth on New Year’s Day, or just party in the streets, either way you’ll be part of an historic celebration.
Big Name Headliners
Mark Ronson is headlining this year’s Hogmanay in the Gardens. Need we say more? He’s got 7 Grammys, 2 BRITs and 1 Oscar. Expect back-to-back hits all-night-long from the main man behind Uptown Funk, Bang, Bang, Bang, and Stop Me. Plus, with Rudimental and Mungo's Hi Fi confirmed to support, the tunes just won't stop.
And that’s just Hogmanay in the Gardens, our Street Party hosted by Johnnie Walker features Marc Almond, The Snuts, Idlewild, Arielle Free, The Mac Twins and many, many more!
Singing Auld Lang Syne
There’s truly nothing better than singing Auld Lang Syne at a Scottish Hogmanay when the clock strikes midnight, an unforgettable, spine-tingling Midnight Moment. Join hands with friends old and new to belt out Robert Burns’ iconic words… just don’t cross your arms until the final verse!
Prepare yourself for the most epic, shivers-up-your-spine fireworks you’ll ever see, all set against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. This year the fireworks will be set to a soundtrack created by the one and only Mark Ronson, it’s going to be insane.
It's for the Whole Family
Hogmanay is best spent shared and you can be together at Edinburgh's Hogmanay with plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Take part in the Torchlight Procession hosted by VisitScotland on 30.12.19 and then bring in the bells (at a reasonable hour of course) at Bairns Afore, hosted by Dick and Dom on 31.12.19. Then, enjoy a New Years Day out spent watching the Loony Dook or dancing at our First Footers Family Ceilidh.
It's Something to Tick Off your Bucket List
There’s a reason why Edinburgh’s Hogmanay was named the Top Bucket List Festival in the World by Big Seven Travel and why it sits on the Discovery Channel’s list of Top 25 Travel Experiences. This is your chance to say, I was there.
